Stephen Duffy - She Loves Me

Heard It Before: No

Review: I struggled with this one a bit, as it is quite catchy, but I also find it a bit too nicey nice, a bit too pop song by the numbers, and it almost feels like an unfinished song the Beach Boys left on the cutting room floor, that someone else discovered twenty years later and decided to dust off and have a crack at recording it themselves. Not a bad song, but one I couldn't justify ranking above any of the others in this round

The million euro question now though, did I already know it? Are you about to get 38 points or a big fat 0???

I'd be surprised if you knew it, but it's certainly possible
That would be just pure cruel if you know it😁

Can - Halleluwah

Heard It Before: No

Review: When I first saw the song title I was worried this was going to be a cover of Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, but sung by the "Mawage" Priest with the lisp from The Princess Bride… Thankfully it was nothing of the sort and actually turned out to be 18 and a half minutes of pure perfection. If anything my only criticism of a song of this length is that it probably wasn't long enough for me, I could've gladly listened to another hour or so of this with relative ease and plenty of enjoyment. It oozes epicness from beginning to end and might possibly just be the coolest thing I've ever heard. I won't get into the technicalities of it all, because I wouldn't be able do it justice, but there's a lot going on and I'm loving every element of it… Chef's Kiss!!!

If the rest of you only check out one song in this round, make sure it's this one, all 18 and a half minutes of it...
I'm refreshing way too much here Big Grin
Well everyone survived Something Old completely unscathed... Congrats you all bested me on that one and it made for far more interesting listening than hearing stuff I already knew... I wouldn't go getting lulled into a false sense of a security though people, because I can guarantee that there will be victims of the Double or Nothing twist at some point...  Wink

Oh 100%, but that's exactly why I designed the game... I have zero issue with ranking someone in first place only to award them zero points, and with three rounds to go, maybe I will get my chance... Mwuhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Once I knew you were waiting, I did hold off for a few minutes longer, it was just sitting there waiting for me to hit "Post Reply" as you waited in anticipation...  pac
Well It was a gamble but if you like it, you LIKE it!

Interesting that you say you could listen to it for far longer, the way the songs fades out I'm sure they kept jamming it for a lot longer!

They were very influential on many artists and bands, far ahead of their time.

The drummer who is the centrepiece of this track with his hypnotic groove is called Jaki Liebezeit which fittingly translates to Love time
The only other song I knew was Pantera because she nominated it in one of my games, you needs new songs Spears Will have to have a listen to the others

I was dissapointed in the lack of outrage from Rsoaps, the no filter reviews was one of the games selling points for me. Shame on us all for being so good

Great reveal @Rachel Stevens on a Pogo Stick  and well done @osh

Genuinely it never felt like it was nearly 20 minutes for me and I was always disappointed when it faded out, because I genuinely wanted to hear more...

Yeah, you know I miss being able to rant, it's far easier to write a scathing review than a positive one, but if nothing else I'm fair, and the standard was very high for me, and I did feel bad ranking people low, so I couldn't really go off on any rants... Not this round anyway...
I promise to listen to them all tomorrow. Only knew 1, Chris de Burg.
I'm so happy I at least got some points😊

That reminds me, here's a YouTube Playlist of all songs from that round, ordered from 1st to 19th...

Just changed it from Private to Public now that one has been revealed, and will make the playlists for all rounds Public once I've done the reveals, someone just remind me if I forget to post it after each round...

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5L3A...Tr07omAGN2

I think they're all worth listening to as people will without a doubt disagree with my order of preference, which is also part of the fun of Walrus... disagreeing with the host... Tongue
That was a very interesting round. Made even better by you @Rachel Stevens on a Pogo Stick
not knowing ANY of the songs. I didn't expect that at all Shy
Not last yet, still time for that to change 🤣🤣
Mine will certainly be divisive, if anyone is up for listening to it given the length that is.

Absolutely delighted though that you like it so much, as it really is one of the most epic tracks I've heard. Happy out even if I score terribly from here on.

Love this guys reaction to it, you start at A and end up at 96 Big Grin

(Weird I can't seem to post the vid at the correct starting point, but reaction is at 19:45)

Ah shite. Was it not 'Cowboys from Hell' I submitted?

I had originally selected that as my song but changed it to Cemetery Gates last minute because I thought I had submitted it before but couldn't remember  Blush
18 minutes long 😲😲

i love the song thatks in front of me and i think its the only one i know.
Can't believe no one zeroed, well done everyone Tongue

Osh, fair play. Nothing but respect and admiration for anyone entering a 18min song, can't wait to listen to it tomorrow. I've a train journey into Dublin, that'll fill more than half the journey Big Grin

Delighted that James got me second. As you mentioned Sit Down, I think that's the worst thing that happened to them, in hindsight. They're an epic band with so many good songs, but Sit Down isn't really representative of them

As for Tomorrow, I entered that for very personal reasons while drunk at 2am and I love it, so I'm very pleased you did too Smile

Someone clearly never studied music for the Leaving Cert... 'Twas standard fare listening to pieces of music that long over and over for two years straight... And it was awesome... Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, at 20 minutes long, played twice on the bus in to school and that counting as "study time" was pure bliss...
I'm off to a great start with 2 points at least  Big Grin Wink Smile

My track is from the Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack, love the film, early from John Hughes

Echobelly - Insomniac

Heard It Before: No

Review: I know the name Echobelly and may have heard some other stuff from them, but can't remember any of it, and this one is definitely completely new to me. A really great song, the chorus is especially enjoyable. Had a quick gander at the Echobelly wikipedia page and the first paragraph says they were often compared to Blondie and The Smiths, and I was like… "Yes, that's exactly what this sounds like"

@Irish Aris Great song, never heard of them before, they remind me of scheer who were a band up north in the mid 90's.

Smashing Pumpkins - Window Paine

Heard It Before: No

Review: Funnily enough, although I've always liked what I've heard from The Smashing Pumpkins, which is mostly just some of the bigger singles that would've gotten a lot of airplay in the '90s, I've never thought to scratch beyond the surface and explore more of their stuff, but this is phenomenal. Really the top three in this round are some of the best I've ever gotten in a Walrus. This was the first song submitted and it was a good sign of the overall quality to come from everyone. I was genuinely surprised that two songs came along and managed to knock it from the top spot, because it really is class, and I'll be making a point of doing a deep dive on the Pumpkins going forward

Wow delighted with 34 points Smile . You should definitely give gish a listen, its their best album imo, nearly everyone will tell you mellon collie and Siamese Dream are there best albums but gish is my favorite.

@Necro you should host a Walrus of Long Songs for the craic, where we try to win you around to Epic Lenghty Songs... Just 3 Rounds...

Round 1: Songs 5-10 Minutes Long
Round 2: Songs 10-15 Minutes Long
Round 3: Songs 15+ Minutes Long

You could just take your time with it... Don't rush it, just enjoy them from time to time, one or two songs per sitting, while sipping a glass of fine wine... It can take as long as it takes for you to get around to doing a reveal... Far less work than a Movie or TV Walrus...

Just for you then Wink

I knew 11 of the other acts (as well as my own), although I had only heard of Echo Belly. There was one other song I knew besides my own entry- Auto de Fe's All is Yellow (Hot Hot Hot). I am quite familiar with that song and I always enjoyed it. Good call @Edser !
While I have a thread where everyone has to pay attention to me and listen to what I say, I've a bit of a teaser for you all...

I already have plans for my next game, which will be a fresh and improved take on a game I hosted on boards back in the day. It will also utilise a new scoring system that we've not used in any games of a similar format before, and if you think a twist like Double or Nothing raised the scoring stakes, well this new number crunching endeavour will make Double or Nothing look like mere child's play

I take it I have your intrigue fully piqued so...

Watch. This. Space.

Round 2 Reveal is set for the same time next Monday, provided nothing unexpected crops up

Round 2 will be Something New

As with last week, each day I'll be posting a song I might have chosen for such a round were someone else hosting, and as always if you knew the song already award yourself with a Gold Star... keep tally of your stars and let us know how many you amassed by the end of the game...

My selection for today is...

Hot Milk - Glass Spiders
