well, they would gopher them, or use altivista or yahoo search on there netscape browser.
yahoo was like a directory back then, where you'd submit the site into the books category. altavista was like a predecessor to google, where it scraped the web, but finding stuff was just a chore. google redefined internet search so much so that it gained the term, to google for stuff Big Grin

Oh jesus, remember Altavista...

The funny thing is, stories like this will become this generation's version of our grandparent's telling us how they got to school

Back in my day, telephones were fixed to the wall in your house, you couldn't just walk around with them. If you wanted to make a call when you were out and about, you had to use a telephone booth on the street. What's a telephone booth? I'll explain later. And if you wanted to connect to the internet, you had to sit at a giant screen in the corner of the living room. And you couldn't connect to the internet and talk on the phone to someone at the same time. How did we watch Netflix? Oh boy, are you in for a surprise, let me first tell you about this incredible device called a VCR...

Those telephone booths had calling cards that actually became collector's items.

Telephone on the wall?  Ooohhh, fancy.  The rest of us had to make do with the telephone table in the hall.  If you were really lucky you had one with a seat as part of it. Big Grin

Do you remember when people starting to get a cordless phone, i.e. the LAN line phone that you could take around the house? When they first came out, not many, if any, had mobile phones, so it was quite something. That reminds me: remember when mobile phones were for making and receiving calls? Moving on: remember texts?  Smile

Gosh, texts, 25p per text! Having to type numbers repeatedly to get letters, especially S or Z where you had to press 7 or 9 FOUR times before the letter would come up!

Conversation on the Dart before texts became a thing, when commuter's mobile rings. "Hi Love. Yeah I'm nearly home. I got those messages. I'll talk to you when I get home".

We didn't have our own phone line in the house for ages, there was a line between my grandparents and ours. If my parents wanted to make a call, one of us would be sent over to Nana to switch the line over. And we had to put 20p into the box for the cost of the call too!
She often just switched it over to ours, and if it rang and was for them, we would be sent over to get her to pick up the phone and transfer the call too.

Kol said that you can still be a Phone A Friend even if not in the competition. You cam also be in The Audience, i.e. submit an answer which will be taken into account if someone Asks the Audience.

Considering I had 0 knowledge of the question, 25% chance of getting it right, I feel a lot more confident after reading my friends comments.

Yes you can, or you can use all 3 lifelines on a question and still bank. Same format as the original show.

Oh no, did you go for Irving Berlin? I narrowed it down to those 2 but knew I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas was Irving's famous song.

No, ruled out Berlin and Porter quickly. I was 50/50 between Copeland and Gershwin. Well, a little surer about Copeland, which is why I went with him in the end. Ah well. I didn't need that €16K anyway Smile I 100% would have taken the money if it was real life.
