For decades, The Japanese, as a matter of good manners, have worn masks on public transport and when in enclosed spaced if they have flu/cold/cough.
What chance that the me,me,me centered westerners would do likewise ?
I don't think there is anything self centered about disliking them and can't help but wonder about why a person wears them when it isn't for health reasons.
Germs are not to be feared and neither are other people.
In saying all of that of course one must do what feels right for them.
