Wichita Lineman has a whole essay of thoughts, but did he overthink?
Mentioned both DeValera and Wilde, but misses out!
Quote: You are certainly stretching our old brain cells this week!
Seeing as I was feeling very brave this morning and decided to be the reds rustler I've had to have a good think about this one. Especially seeing as it's so close.
If I was in their shoes and nominating I'd have to have several fields to consider. James Joyce, Oscar Wilde or even Bram Stoker from the literary world or Arthur Guinness as he invented, well Guinness and that makes him an important historical figure to my mind. I could say St. Patrick but he wasnt even Irish so maybe I'd go to the arts world and pick Maureen O'Hara from the 'fillums' or that Gay Byrne for The Late Late Show and all the taboo breaking he did on the telly. Musically we could go with Bono, Christy Moore or even Bob Geldof (for Live Aid). That was historic, mind you it was in Britain. In sport, Ray Houghton put the ball in the English net but the Scottish accent still makes it hard for me to pick him for this. Roy Keane has the accent, as does Katie Taylor but neither are far enough in the past to qualify.
Then of course we come to the politics end of things. Douglas Hyde was our first President, Mary Robinson the first lady to hold that office and then there's also Dev.
All I'm doing so far is making things harder for myself.
So without further ado my attempt at a rustle - so help me Jesus (and all his carpenter friends) - is Michael Collins.
