To me the definitive amphitheatre would be The Colosseum but even in the 50's it was very dilapidated. One summer in the 60's I was in Verona. I stumble across the amphitheatre there ( https://www.scip.be/PhotosItaly/Italie%2...heater.jpg ). There was nobody there, not a touristic attraction, I just went in and walked around
No doubt there is a 'visitor centre' there these days. Life was so different back then !
