A brief explanation of the elements of art and the principles of design.

Elements of Art

These are the building blocks of any artwork.

Line - the path of a point moving through space, can be straight, curved, jagged, can be a literal drawn line, or a line that eye moves along in a piece, it's direction can dramatically alter a piece



Shape - an enclosed area of space, can be created with lines or using other elements, can be geometric or natural or abstract



Form - a bit like shape except 3d in nature, can be actually 3d or perceived by using other elements (such as dark edges or drop shadows)




Space - covers a few things, such as perspective and depth, mainly concerned with positive (the space taken up by objects) and negative space (the space not taken up by objects)



Texture - the tactile nature of a piece, can be actual or perceived



Colour - well, this hardly needs explanation!



Tone - the lightness or darkness of a colour. A tint is made by adding white, a shade by adding black, and a tone by adding grey. Tone can also be created by varying line width or closeness

Principles of Design 

These are how the building blocks above are arranged.

Rhythm - a visual tempo that guides the eye across an artwork, usually created using other principles such as repetition of elements above



Contrast - the arrangement of opposites, such as light and dark, big and small, smooth and rough



Balance - the relative weight of the composition, can be symmetrical, asymmetrical, or even radial



Repetition (or Variety) - used to create energy in a piece, you might repeat a shape but change up the colours. Too much variety or too much repetition can make it super boring



Emphasis - some way of making certain parts or objects in a piece stand out, can be done with colour, size, tone etc to draw the eye to that part



Movement - both the depiction of actual actions and how your eye is drawn across a piece



Unity (or Harmony) - everything in the piece working together to give a pleasing effect



Scale/Proportion (left this out so there'd be 7 on each list) - the relative sizes of objects in the work, or the work itself

Side note: I have always wanted to join an art class just as a hobby. I just haven't been able to fit in any local classes around work hours . It's on the bucket list though...
