What I'm saying is don't phone me.
I had read recently about the bridge of spies in Berlin, and there was some mention about an album called after it, but I couldn't remember the band.
The 50/50 narrowed it nicely  Smile

Like a lot here, I was able to rule out The Cure and Depeche Mode as I knew they had albums before 1987. It didn't really matter at that point, but I was also pretty sure that Depeche Mode did not have an album with that title. That just left two possible answers. I knew that the Saw Doctors became well-known later than 1987, but that did not rule out the possibility that they were an unknown act at that stage. However, I was pretty sure I had in fact heard the name of their first album (which I could not remember!) and it wasn't Bridge of Spies, if it was their first! Besides, that was not the kind of album title I would expect from The Saw Doctors! That just left T'Pau. They were big in 1987. In fact, they had a few hits. Heart and Soul was their first hit, but, understandably, everyone thinks of China In Our Hands, because it was a massive hit for them. I heard a few of their singles - repeats of Top of The Pops on BBC4 help to remind me in the last year or two - and I have to say that I particularly can't stand China in Our Hands! Anyway, given the tiny possibilities with The Saw Doctors, I was about 95% certain it was T'Pau, so I took a slight risk on it.

Maybe I should have gone with my gut and saved a lifeline These were my thoughts at 10.16am:

quickbeam Wrote:Again, need to think this out...
A) Google - pretty sure there was a bit birthday for Google recently, 20, or 25 years going? That would mean founded 1996-2001.
B) Amazon - not sure. Long before Alexa and Prime, it was a book seller, which is pretty low tech. It may even have been mail order and not online at first.
C) Facebook - well, here I refer to The Social Network, but when was that set? Late 90s at the earliest. I think I can rule this out.
D) Netflix - like Amazon it was fairly low tech to start with, a service that would post out DVDs to you with an envelope included so you could post it back to them after watching.

Am thinking Amazon or Netflix. Probably leaning more towards Amazon.

Trig seems confident, I could ask him. Or, I could risk Amazon.

Until deciding to Phone at 12.05pm.

Just checked, and:
Google - 1998
Amazon - 1994
Facebook - 2004
Netflix - 1997

My first thought was to ask for 50-50 and then I dismissed it and headed down the cul-de-sac, rather like a lot of contestants in the Jeremy Clarkson era! I did not realise that Amazon had a pre-internet existence, likewise with Netflix. At least, you know I wasn't cheating!  Angry

Amazon did not have a pre internet existence. It started as an online bookstore, that is, selling books over the web.
Later expandin into selling everything, not just books.

Netflix was dvd movie rental via the post, before it became movie streamer.

well, they would gopher them, or use altivista or yahoo search on there netscape browser.
yahoo was like a directory back then, where you'd submit the site into the books category. altavista was like a predecessor to google, where it scraped the web, but finding stuff was just a chore. google redefined internet search so much so that it gained the term, to google for stuff Big Grin

I remember in the early days of the internet Guinness installed PCs for anyone to use in a few pubs, including McGowan's in Phibsboro. We were there one afternoon and we decided to have a play with it and within minutes we were chatting with someone in Ohio or somewhere like that. Accessing it was a bit of a chore iirc, it was all done through Netscape, but it was so incredible we didn't care how long it took. Kids these days would lose their minds waiting for a 28.8k dial-up modem to get going. Big Grin
