A long long time ago, on a forum long since decayed, Walruses were originally all about discovering new music and giving fanfare to lesser known songs, but as the years have gone on and the format gained popularity, the majority of songs entered became more and more mainstream, so now I want to go back to basics and pay homage to the original founders...
But I'm guessing people may need some incentive to think outside the box, so this is...
Double or Nothing:
Each round will be ranked as usual whether I know the songs already or not, but here's the catch, if you've submitted a song I know, you get 0 points for that entire round. So you could have the best song of the round and be ranked #1, but if Soapy over here knew it already that'll be an automatic Null for that round
However if I didn't know the song, you'll get double the points of what that rank would have earned as per usual Walrus rules ; so if there's 13 players and you get 1st place in that round with a song new to me, instead of 13 points, you'll get 26 points, etc. etc.
It also means the song has to be good, because it will be ranked against all songs in the round. So even if yours is the only song in a round that is new to me, if its absolute dogshit and ranks last, the most you'll get for last place (even with double score) is 2 points, which is feck all in the grand scheme, so try to make sure the songs are good as well as unknown to me
It adds a new element to the game that I think will be fun to try out, but if you're struggling to follow the concept, basically just submit songs that you think I won't know already if you want to do well, it's that simple
Anyone who has been paying any sort of attention will know my music knowledge is vast, so this may be tricky for some of you, but I'll keep the categories fairly broad to give everyone a fighting chance...
The 4 Rounds Will Be:
Round 1: Something Old -
just pick any song from the 20th Century. That's anything (including album tracks) released between January 1st 1901 and December 31st 2000. Thats 100 years of music to choose from, so I'm sure there's a few even I don't know
Round 2: Something New -
any song (including album tracks) released after January 1st 2001 to present day. Maybe its not 100 years, but with the growth of the interwebs a lot more songs get released every single day, and its impossible to keep up with it all, so there'll be more than a few that have slipped by me
Round 3: The Female of the Species -
any song from a female solo artist or female fronted band. There's been rounds (and tournaments) like this back in the old place where people submitted duets with male artists or bands with both female and male vocalists singing - I'll have none of that shit, female vocals only on songs submitted for this round please... and obviously, also should be something you think I may not have heard before
Round 4: Go Big or Go Home -
really want to see people have to take a gamble here, so I'm looking for songs that have charted in the Top 10, but I still want you to try and find one that has slipped by me and that I hopefully won't know. It can be any Chart from any Country from modern day to long ago, as long as I can see on Wikipedia (or you can send proof from elsewhere if there's no wiki info available) that it has ranked in the Top 10 of some sort of official chart. This round is obviously the biggest roll of the dice, but that's what makes it all the more fun... Vegas Baby!!!
