A long long time ago, on a forum long since decayed, Walruses were originally all about discovering new music and giving fanfare to lesser known songs, but as the years have gone on and the format gained popularity, the majority of songs entered became more and more mainstream, so now I want to go back to basics and pay homage to the original founders...

But I'm guessing people may need some incentive to think outside the box, so this is...

Double or Nothing:
Each round will be ranked as usual whether I know the songs already or not, but here's the catch, if you've submitted a song I know, you get 0 points for that entire round. So you could have the best song of the round and be ranked #1, but if Soapy over here knew it already that'll be an automatic Null for that round

However if I didn't know the song, you'll get double the points of what that rank would have earned as per usual Walrus rules ; so if there's 13 players and you get 1st place in that round with a song new to me, instead of 13 points, you'll get 26 points, etc. etc.

It also means the song has to be good, because it will be ranked against all songs in the round. So even if yours is the only song in a round that is new to me, if its absolute dogshit and ranks last, the most you'll get for last place (even with double score) is 2 points, which is feck all in the grand scheme, so try to make sure the songs are good as well as unknown to me

It adds a new element to the game that I think will be fun to try out, but if you're struggling to follow the concept, basically just submit songs that you think I won't know already if you want to do well, it's that simple

Anyone who has been paying any sort of attention will know my music knowledge is vast, so this may be tricky for some of you, but I'll keep the categories fairly broad to give everyone a fighting chance...

The 4 Rounds Will Be:

Round 1: Something Old -
just pick any song from the 20th Century. That's anything (including album tracks) released between January 1st 1901 and December 31st 2000. Thats 100 years of music to choose from, so I'm sure there's a few even I don't know  Tongue

Round 2: Something New -
any song (including album tracks) released after January 1st 2001 to present day. Maybe its not 100 years, but with the growth of the interwebs a lot more songs get released every single day, and its impossible to keep up with it all, so there'll be more than a few that have slipped by me

Round 3: The Female of the Species -
any song from a female solo artist or female fronted band. There's been rounds (and tournaments) like this back in the old place where people submitted duets with male artists or bands with both female and male vocalists singing - I'll have none of that shit, female vocals only on songs submitted for this round please... and obviously, also should be something you think I may not have heard before

Round 4: Go Big or Go Home -
really want to see people have to take a gamble here, so I'm looking for songs that have charted in the Top 10, but I still want you to try and find one that has slipped by me and that I hopefully won't know. It can be any Chart from any Country from modern day to long ago, as long as I can see on Wikipedia (or you can send proof from elsewhere if there's no wiki info available) that it has ranked in the Top 10 of some sort of official chart. This round is obviously the biggest roll of the dice, but that's what makes it all the more fun... Vegas Baby!!!

@E.N. It was when we were reminiscing recently about the golden age of Walrus, that I started thinking of how to create an in game feature to try and bring it back to that classic style than what some of the more modern players might be used to

It's a very good twist. Hoping all my submissions score. In fact, I'm tempted to avoid anything in English to increase my chances Tongue

Hmmm...

Do I have any songs that you might not have heard of yet? ✅✅✅✅

Will they be songs you (or anyone else) will like? ❌

...Count me in so 😊
I'm in but given your music knowledgeability I'll probably score 0, you may know the artist but not the song hopefully @Rachel Stevens on a Pogo Stick
In too!!
I am somewhat confident that 2 of my 4 selections will definitely score something. . .

Oh there's plenty I don't know, I discover new stuff every day from all eras in music history, there's so much music out there, you just gotta look past the blatantly obvious...

Or take a gamble that something blatantly obvious has slipped by my radar, which happens more often than you may think. Sometimes I'm so busy digging for Truffles, I miss a lot of the Chocolate treats popular with the masses...   Wink

Defeatist attitude Deja! I'm going to start by listening to the last five years worth of the Eesti lood tipp-40 (that's the Estonian chart for domestic music) Tongue

I knew my songs for Round 2 & 3 straight away.

Round 1, I'm sure I'll figure something, but Round 4 might be a bit tricky. Especially if I'm trying to stick with a theme.

It may be closer to the weekend before I get a submission through 🙃
The whole double or nothing was a nice twist.

I'd probably end up forgetting about this so threw in an entry there before I forget about it.

The Double or Nothing twist has certainly made it more interesting for me anyway, with people trying to avoid the heavy hitters, I'm discovering some absolute gems.

8 entries so far. No hurry for anyone, will be keeping it open a good while yet.
For the charting song I think I've gone mad

Thinking of the highest placed single from a band who had 12 singles and 5 albums chart in the UK, all within your lifetime. This one was top 20 in Ireland too

But it's an absolute tune, so...

The song I'm thinking of for that was number 1 in several European countries in the 80's but only got to number 87 in the UK for some reason, will soapy know it I wonder?

ETA how were there 16 series of Eurotrash?! 🤣
Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but I can't believe they stretched it that far
I haven't forgot about this either. I WILL get round to getting a submission in👩‍🎤

I decided to give this one a go.

I'll be leaving it open for another couple of weeks at least. Unlike my previous games that had super quick turnaround times, this will be a bit of a slower burn from my end, as I'm only settling back into student life and have assignments and research projects to keep on top of, so I'm gonna be taking this nice and easy in terms of reveals. Just ripping that band aid off now if anyone was getting their hopes up for all 4 rounds revealed over 2 consecutive nights as I've done in the past

Might set February 14th as the provisional closing date for entries, just in case any of the usual lurkers who haven't got in yet can be enticed to play

Have 15 people in at the moment, but I'm happy to have as many people as want to throw their hat in the ring - the more the merrier

Speaking of the more the merrier, this is a quick shoutout to some of my regular Walrus Contendees who haven't been about the site much recently... @Homer J. Fong @Zaph @osh @Trigger can I sway any of you back to the dark side and get ye in on this action?

I'd like to play

Is the basis of what I have to do to send you four songs as per those 4 rounds each song will then be ranked 1-13 (assuming 13 players)Once ranked songs will be given 2-26 points and then the final step is that they will be modified by the fact that if you know the song the score will be multiplied by 0

Can you define "know" a song is it that when you read my entry you could hum the melody or is it that once you play the song you recognise it as something you have heard before ?

Do the songs have to be in English

Yep, that's exactly it, you got it.

Quote:Can you define "know" a song is it that when you read my entry you could hum the melody or is it that once you play the song you recognise it as something you have heard before ?

The second one. I'm defining "know" as anything I recognise as having heard before.

There's very much an element of luck involved because someone could send me something completely obscure and I happen to be one of the few people on Earth who have heard it, and someone else could send me the most played song currently on the radio which might be something completely new to me.

Not knowing whether or not I'll know it is also meant to be part of the fun, so don't stress about it anyway, just follow your gut instinct.  Wink

Quote:Do the songs have to be in English

Not at all, I'm always delighted to hear songs from all languages and cultures.
I found a song from 2000 and I'm glad that it would be correctly a 20th century song
I don't know if I'll enter it as 20th century or at all but I'm just appreciative that you have correctly defined the beginning of the century
May I ask what age you are ?

I'm 47 so I know that while my knowledge of music is diverse an eclectic my knowlegldge of late 80s-early 90s music is far more comprehensive than any other genre
