Well, if it wasn't over already, that draw has ended the league. City now 1/20 to win

They can buy and sell the league. Money talks and I don't have a problem with that, fair dues to them. I know a lot of people will disagree with me.
We had 2 exceptional seasons, loosing 2 games in 2 full seasons, unfortunate just to win 1 title. City have nearly 2 international level teams, thats the difference. They may have an off season and someone will get lucky though they relistically could dominate for as long as Pep is there and probably beyond. Will be interesting to see how Newcastle will progress in the next few years. 2nd place will be almost like winning the league now for most teams.

I suspect they're not with City, for example there seemed pretty strong evidence of them paying Etihad to sponsor them, which isn't on.
But it's not like we're penniless. We're run as a business, and I do like that, but the money for signings should have been there if we needed it. Our issue seems to be trimming the squad first, which we needed to do, and smaller teams just not shopping for our fringe players the way they did pre-covid

Villa sign Coutinho on loan, could be a great signing for them, hopefully he does well.

That was a hugely entertaining 0-0 draw. Not a Liverpool, fan, but I can't stand Chelsea, so delighted to see them, and Kelleher win.

I thought the keeper sub for the shootout was a dick move. Also with his antics during the penalties, if anyone was going to loose it for them, I'm delighted it was him.
Kepa might be world class but Kelleher is pure class.

But it seems so petty to criticise that, when he had a brilliant 120mins and then, when he had take a pen, he had ice in his veins, unlike Kepa!
Hopefully that's a nice little boost to what is already a decent bit of momentum. Just a shame that VAR were a joke in the Everton - City match yesterday

Well I had to Google, anyone remember Mangala for City?
50 mil from Porto, stayed 5 seasons before leaving on a free. Had 2 loan spells in that time with Valencia and Everton.
I think he will play fine beside Maguire.

City have thrown a hell of a lot of money at the defence, and discarded a few players too. Even Stones and Ake now, hardly play and what did they cost?
Sebastien Haller up front? West Ham shelled out £45m for him and sold him for less than half that 10 goals and a season and a half later. He's knocking them in for fun now at Ajax.
Alternatively Henrikh Mkhitaryan at either Man Utd or Arsenal, he was crap at both, or Alexis Sanchez who United swapped him for and who then saw his career nosedive at Old Trafford.

What are your thoughts on Bielsa, Zaph?
Seems like a real love affair with him and the fans coming to an end. Guess it had been a very bad few weeks though

AWB is RB, you could probably throw in Fred as the money paid but personally I think he is better than made out in the press/opposition fans. Van de Beek for midfield also

Emerson Royal another option. And he didn't cost fuck all but Eric Dier can fill a hole at centre back there alongside Maguire. The Titanic would turn quicker than both!

Genuinely gutted, like probably 99% of Leeds fans. There are a good few around that have said he needed to go because of his unwillingness to change tactics in the face of an awful run of results, but I guarantee that they still adore him and would rather things went differently this season. Even if the season was a bit better than it has been so that relegation isn't an issue, it would have allowed him to leave on his own terms with a proper goodbye from the fans in the summer. Unfortunately there was a certain inevitability to his departure after the Spurs game, it was the latest in a string of games where teams have been able to score for fun against us.
You have to remember that before Radrizanni took over Leeds had had a succession of terrible managers and even worse owners. Then along came Bielsa who, most Leeds fans would admit, was really a bit of an unknown despite his long and sort of illustrious record. What he did was take a bunch of fairly mediocre Championship players and turned them into Premier League players and internationals. And he did it with them playing the best football any Leeds fan can remember seeing in living memory. But even more important is the manner in which he set about changing the club. After the Spygate nonsense at Derby he called his press conference and most fans expected him to quit, but instead he gave his 90 minute Powerpoint presentation explaining why he didn't really need to spy on Derby anyway. Then when he FA hit the club with the bullshit 200k fine, he insisted on paying it out of his own pocket because he felt he was responsible for bringing the punishment down on the club. After that really he could do no wrong, and his elevation to godlike status was confirmed when the club was promoted. There's even a street in Leeds named after him and the city has united in support of the club like I've never seen it before.
He's an incredibly humble and shy man who really has no desire to be in the limelight, but at the same time always has time for fans, particularly kids. He never moaned about referees or the many questionable VAR decisions that have gone against Leeds (that's not being all conspiracy theorist btw, all clubs at the bottom always seem to have that sort of luck go against them), he never complained about not having enough players due to the ridiculous injury situation which has resulted in a 15 year old on the bench more than once and he never looked for a game to be postponed because of Covid at the club. That's just the way he is, he gets on with things and deals with the situation as best he can.
Sorry for the essay, I know you just asked a simple question, but there isn't a simple answer when it comes to Bielsa. He really is unique and it's unlikely we'll ever see another manager like him at a top level club in Europe again, so we enjoyed him while we could. It was a wild and mostly enjoyable roller coaster, I just hope the club can stay up to ensure that what he started continues.
(01-03-2022, 12:33 AM)Zaph Wrote: Sorry for the essay, I know you just asked a simple questionNot at all, loved reading it. From the outside it was evident how adored he was but I didn't know the detail. It is a real shame that it ended like that
There's parallels in what you say with Benitez for us, we were a bit of a basketcase of a club when he took over and he turned us around. But, more importantly, he bonded with the fans, he got the club. Things went to shit near the end of his tenure, but that was nearly all on the old owners. Broke my heart when he left.
(and I am not grown up enough to contemplate Klopp leaving us!)
01-03-2022, 07:56 AM
Yeah every club has *that* manager you never want to see leave because of what they've done for the club, and sometimes it's not always stuff on field either (though it helps).
Unfortunately with Bielsa as you say Zaph, he sort of had to go because he definitely wasn't going to change tactics and the beatings were getting worse. That being said even if Leeds manage to rescue themselves under the new man and play some sort of pragmatic football it won't matter cos God has left the room.
