The United Kingdom is one of the "Big Five" countries, alongside France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, which have an automatic place in the final of the contest each year, due to their participant broadcasters being the largest financial contributors to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
Vi is for violin, which figured in most of the earlier entries, but takes a leading part in Norway's win in 1995. The winning duo was Secret Garden and the song was Nocturne. One-half of the duo was Irish violinist Fionnuala Sweeney. Sandwiched between two Irish wins, it felt like half-Irish Secret Garden was secretly a partial Irish winner!
