A laconic, chain-smoking barber blackmails his wife's boss and lover for money to invest in dry cleaning, but his plan goes terribly wrong.
Review
The Coens are a bit hit and miss with me, there have been a few of their movies already in the contest though this one is arguably my favourite. I like a good noir movie and this one is shot in black and white so a real throwback to the classic era. Solid performances all round and by Billy Bob in particular who I wouldn’t normally have a great deal of time for. It is quite a slow burn but it kept my interest all the way through. Great dialogue as you would expect with this genre and a nice bit of humour but not over done. A lot of Beethoven throughout which was nice. Great pick here, well done.
Trivia
The film cast includes two Oscar winners: Frances McDormand and Billy Bob Thornton; and two Oscar nominees: Richard Jenkins, Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
