Round 1 will be Something Old (anything released in the 20th Century)

Between now and the reveal of Round 1, I'll post a song every day of a song I might have submitted for this round if someone else was hosting... Let me know if they're new to people or not, just for fun, and if you were already familiar with a song you get a gold start or something...  Tongue

First up from me, one of the greatest, yet most underated songs of '90s...

That's good, but... I remember this when I've run walrii. The problem I have with something like The Toadies is that it sounds so similar to other stuff I know that it doesn't grab me, but when it's older stuff I have no idea what came first. They may well have been the trailblazers and I have been late to the scene (just checked, released in 1994, so that's quite likely)

That's why it's so easy dismiss modern music. At least I know for sure that most of it is derivative and I can be a grumpy old man about it 🤣

The Toadies are looking a bit lonely there all on their own, so lets get my Day 2 Selection for Something Old up, throw in an extra factor that may or may not second guess their own choices... Tongue

I will say, when this song was released I hadn't been born yet, so I have no idea whether or not it was something that may have been quite well known here in Ireland back in the day (that can be said for quite a few of my own Something Old picks you'll be hearing between now and Monday), but hopefully its not something you'll all know already... And give yourselves a gold star if you do know it... Wink

It certainly is a very 80s type of production. It's not bad on first hearing.

The next Soapy Selection for Something Old is from what I believe is the first all-female rock band, at least the first that made any sort of impression anyway... David Bowie was a big fan of theirs and often sang their praises, but they're not exactly a household name, so I wonder how many of you have a) heard of them and b) know this song... As always Gold Star for anyone who recognises the track...

I heard of them. They were on one of those rock compilation programmes on Fridays on BBC4 repeated a few times over the last year or two. It showed a performance by them on The Old Grey Whistle Test as far as I can recall. It would have been the early 1970s too. I don't remember hearing this particular song before. It kept my attention anyway.

Never heard of them but it was good. Sounded a bit Janis Joplinish which wasnt a bad thing for me.

Hmmm, good question, I'm not sure how I feel about it...

If it leads to them deciding to release some new music great, but since its likely just them doing the stadium tours as a one off, I don't actually care about it, because the type of crowd it will attract out to The 3Arena Point (a venue I don't care for anyway) is gonna be a lot of people who just want to go on a novelty night out with their friends and who will all talk through the whole thing and annoy the crap out of me, so I couldn't actually be bothered getting a ticket...

I've gotten to the stage where the better known an act are, the less likely I am going to head out to see them, mainly because of the audience well known acts attract, but also I prefer smaller venues anyway and tickets that are around the €20 mark...

Oh yeah, it'll be a terrible crowd Tongue
I saw them in 98, that'll do me!

I'm the same, much rather be in Whelan's or the Workman's than the arena. In general, prices for the bigger shows are stopping me too. Not the arena, but I got excited to see Gogol Bordello were coming to the Olympia. It's over €50 though, so I'm going to skip it I think. And that's not even expensive these days. Maybe if I can find a job I'll think differently again, but I struggle to justify it these days, and I think I'm pretty well off

I've only ever seen them as S Club 3, when it was just Jo, Bradley, and Paul, back in 2009. It was fun, and I ended up chatting to the three of them after the set, but yeah I'm not pushed for ever seeing all 7 of them live. Now, if it was just Rachel doing a solo show of her own stuff, that I'd go to in a heartbeat, especially if it was in The Academy or something... Tongue

The Olympia is another venue I'm not a fan of, and throw Vicar Street into that mix for good measure. It takes a lot to get me to buy a ticket in venues I've grown to hate

On the other hand, I'm willing to take a chance on someone I've never even listened to if they're playing Whelans, Workmans Club, Grand Social, or Button Factory, because I really like them all as venues

Lol at band name, dumb childish humour for me

Another new one but grows on you after a few listens

@Rachel Stevens on a Pogo Stick you ever think of a career in the music field, like dj or teaching etc.,  as you have a good knowledge

I mean, I have had many radio shows over the years, so I've kinda been there and done that...

But really what I've learned after having several "dream jobs" is that I don't want to do something I love as a career, because it 100% taints them. I don't want a career at all actually. My primary goal in life is to take down the modern slavery that is capitalist working culture which we've all been brainwashed into believing is the only way to "achieve success"... Anyone starting to feel nervous about their own choice for Something Old yet, based on what I've served up myself so far? Or even better is anyone starting to feel more confident in their choice?

Maybe what I'm choosing to share in these songs gives zero indication on how the round itself will go, but then again if you liked none of them so far at all it could mean our tastes will never align and may spell disaster for your game...

Only time will tell, but let's have another one to keep you guessing until Monday evening...

Anyone know this one?

I am, as always, extremely confident in my choice. I'm just not confident in your judging 🤣

That said, you've 100% heard of the band I submitted, everyone has, and it's not a deep cut so the chances of a zero are high. But "you've got to keep faith" 😉

This is the category I'm most confident in because I'm fairly certain you wont know my pick and you will at least not hate it

For the most part I can't remember who submitted what in any of the rounds as I have that info on a different spreadsheet than the one I'm working off to rank them, and haven't reconciled the FOGers with the songs yet

As a little teaser, I will say, regardless of whether I know the songs already or not, the overall standard of songs submitted is very high, easily the highest standard of any Walrus I've hosted, which only makes it harder to rank them against each other...

Never heard the act or the song before. I am sorry to say that it did not do much for me. It sounded like many of the more bland songs from the 1980s. Don't get me wrong - there is plenty of stuff I like from the 1980s but that is certainly not one of them!

Recorded for EMI at Abbey Road too!

But they torpedoed the album and it wasn't actually released until 2003, you know what that means...
