LA Confidential was the last answer I locked in. Must watch it again sometime, I was too young to really appreciate it the first time

Excellent film. It put Russell Crowe on the map. Then he blew up with Gladiator.

edit: and if you like it then have a look at Mulholland Falls too, it's a very underrated hard boiled film in the same style.
