I think Paracetamol is the generic name and then panadol is one of the brand names that derives from it.. could be wrong though

Depends whether you really meant brand or active ingredient.
Panadol is a brand of paracetamol. Paracetamol is the name of a number of the generic versions.

I would say they're not quite the same, because you can get paracetamol that isn't Panadol, the latter is just one brand name. It would be like saying crisps and Tayto are the same thing (which I know a lot of Irish people do use interchageably but it's still not technically correct!)
