Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas? (1984)

RE: FoGs Greatest UK Xmas No. 1 - Homer J. Fong - 11-12-2022

East 17 - Stay Another Day (1994) - quite like both of these but the other is a cover, and not necessarily better than the original.

Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas? (1984) - would be a deserving winner, and even if not I'd vote for anything else over Bohemian fucking Shitesody.

Well, it doesn't mention Christmas at all, sounds like it's about a break up but it's actually about his brother committing suicide, it was released in November and the video that everyone thinks of wasn't the original video. At least Die Hard has a Christmas tree in it Tongue

Same!

I cannot stand that East 17 song - that's my reasoning for voting for The Flying Pickets' Only You! I don't think it should have got this far but it keeps being matched against bad songs! The second match was a tough call, but Christmas won out in the end!

I understand... I have to say, I don't know any of the songs won out. It's been like picking the lesser of two bad songs all the way.

RE: FoGs Greatest UK Xmas No. 1 - E.N. - 12-12-2022

I don't particularly like either, but I think that's a pretty worthy final really. Both pretty iconic Christmas tunes (even though E17 isn't Christmassy Tongue)

Not actually sure who to vote for, will have to mull it over

RE: FoGs Greatest UK Xmas No. 1 - Jluv - 12-12-2022

Band Aid... Do they know it's Christmas time at all 1984
I don't like any other of the Band Aid ones. They don't have the same "feel" as this one.

RE: FoGs Greatest UK Xmas No. 1 - nothing - 12-12-2022

East 17 please.

That band aid song is one of the most patronising - thank god its them not you?! No snow in africa? No shit. No water except tears? Let them know it's christmas by feeding them? What about the rest of the year? A load of virtue signalling bollox. Great tune, but absolutely what you'd expect from self righteous tax dodgers.

RE: FoGs Greatest UK Xmas No. 1 - jp liz v1 - 12-12-2022

I think it is time that East 17 got to go away not stay another day so I vote Feed The World Band Aid Let Them Know It's Christmas, there is no Snow in Africa for Christmas but there is Snow here

Is Midge Ure really that bad?

I'm don't know why Ireland doesn't tax artists, even those earning millions, but is it really tax dodging when you have an exemption?

Just to clarify, Bob Geldof wrote the main part of the song-lyrics and music. Midge Ure was responsible for the "Feed The World" chorus. Bob may have had an input into a bit of those lyrics as well.

Wouldn't be a fan of either, so in a lesser of two evils kind of way, my vote will be for

East 17 - Stay

I do believe the intent was good, but I remember reading an opinion piece by an artist (can't remember her name) who turned down being on the most recent version. She believed it painted an unrealistic picture of Africa and, as a result, harmed tourism which could be more beneficial. I suspect she's probably right

RE: FoGs Greatest UK Xmas No. 1 - Declan A Walsh - 12-12-2022

As regards the musical merit of the different Band Aids, here is what I think:
Band Aid 1 (1984) was the best, and of course it's the version that gets by far the most airplay.
Band Aid 2 (1989) is often overlooked but I think it was pretty good too. Fun fact: Two members of Banarama (Sara Dallin and Karen Woodward) were the only singers on Band Aid 2 that also sang on Band Aid 1!
Band Aid 20 (2004) was okay. It did get quite a bit of airplay for a while after it came out, but not recently. The percussion section at the end was a bit annoying. Fun fact: Bono was the only singer on this that was also on Band Aid 1!
Band Aid 30 (2014) was awful, and I don't think it has been played on the airwaves since it departed the charts!
Fun Facts: Both Bono and Chris Martin had been involved as singers with Band Aid 20 as well! Bono is the only person to have sung on three versions: 1, 20 and 30!
