Not The Passion of the Christ
Is it sci-fi? I have a feeling that even though it looks contemporary or historical, it's actually something like a spaceship they're unearthing?
It is indeed a sci-fi movie
Okay, still not got a clue, but at least I figured that much out. It was the way you cut the image that made me think there was more being uncovered than you'd think.
The thing that is cropped out at the top of the picture is also the name of the movie

Both incorrect, but one is very close
The Waterboy definitely the closer one.

No, not quite as heavy

Nope.
Released around 20 years ago, starring 2 huge actors
Looks a bit like Russell Crowe from The Insider?
Also fits the clue, about 20 years ago, him and Pacino are huge. A serious film, but not as heavy as a serial killer film like Zodiac would be.
I thought it might be Michael Keaton or Kevin Costner. I was going to say Birdman but that's too recent.
No, to both of the above.
Even lighter, and based on a true story I believe..

Not Costner, but someone very similar in age
Looks like JT Walsh to me.
Who is over ten years older than Coster so unlikely.
