What's the catch with competitions like these? Is it so they have your email address and other details and can sell your details to spammers?
(19-10-2021, 01:48 PM)quickbeam Wrote: [ -> ]What's the catch with competitions like these?  Is it so they have your email address and other details and can sell your details to spammers?

I don't think so, in the main. Often they try to sign you up to their mailing list but you can usually avoid selecting that. Some bury the answer to a question within their website to force you to read it but mostly it's just a small amount of publicity for them. For the famous brands I don't worry about my details being sold on, but maybe I'm very naive!

I'm very unsure about this bit - but often these competitions are running in the UK too and have a purchase requirement. That doesn't seem to happen here, I wonder if it's not allowed. So often we get an extension of UK competitions that are free for us to enter, but over there you'd need a proof of purchase

They often want to get your email for marketing, but they are required to clearly state in t&cs and provide an easy opt out by law.

I only enter ones I think are from 'reputable sources' where the T&Cs are clear.

Obviously even if a promoter runs a competition in line with GDPR, you are giving your details to someone and, in case of mishandling, they could be used for spam/hassle.

I've entered a few of these and haven't noted an increase in the spam calls I get Smile

I find I get lots of calls and emails when I enter The Irish Times competitions but I still enter all
Thanks all. As I have naturally paranoid leanings, I'll probably avoid entering so Smile

you could create a dedicated email account for competitions that forwards all mail to your standard email account, name it something like thisemailisforcompetitionsonly@gmail.com.
If you ever notice spam from the account, disable the forwarding and make new account thisemailisforcompetitionsonly2@gmail.com and set up forwarding.
