You need to listen to a lot more REM!

Losing my Religion is nowhere near the best song on that album (Country Feedback, obvs) let alone their entire canon (I don't even know!)

They're an incredible band, and they're so much more and so much better than Losing my Religion
You're probably right, I only know their charted hits and probably not even all of them. Was never really a fan of alt rock. Strangely enough, aftp was one of the first CDs I ever bought, may have been on sale or something. That had a few good songs afair
For me, Automatic For The People is their best album, the one that epitomises what they were about.
And I love Green, being my proper introduction to them. I already knew The One I Love and It's The End of The World as We Know it but Green was the first REM album I bought - Pop Song 89 is still on rotation on my playlists!!

Hard to argue with that, but for me it's Out of Time. Both great albums though. My favourite songs are on New Adventures and Up, though they're much more erratic as albums.

But the run of albums from Document to New Adventures are well worth anyone listening to. And if you like them then the first four, and Up and Reveal, are good too. Their last couple are a bit disappointing though

They were the first gig I went to. The support acts were sleeper, Radiohead and The Cranberries!

Well said. I agree with all of what you said. Try Radio Free Europe from their debit album Murmur.
Another round is ready, might get it posted around 7pm

Surprise Surprise - A song you like from an act you generally don't like
In 10th place with 3 points is

@Sawduck - Ed Sheeran - I See Fire

Heard the song: No

Comments
I’m no Ed Sheeran fan but I do like some of his songs, never heard this one before and never watched the Hobbit and I’m unlikely to ever watch it. First time I listened to this I nearly fell asleep, it just seemed that boring. This however is probably the most improved song in this round after repeated listens. Folk music, if that is what this is, isn’t really my style. That’s why I didn’t like it much at the beginning but this song really does pick up as it goes. Musically and vocally it does a good job, again if you like the style. A decent pick and one that surprised me, which is what this round is all about.

@Rachel Stevens on a Pogo Stick - Fifth Harmony - Sledgehammer

Heard the song: No

I thought this was going to be a Peter Gabriel cover, would have been better if it was. This song has grown on me a bit since the first listen but it certainly hasn’t hit me like sledgehammer. The chorus is decent and the harmonies are good, no pun intended. They are easy on the eye I suppose though nothing very memorable about this one unfortunately.

In 8th place with 5 points is

@Jluv - The Corrs & Bono - Summer Wine

Heard the song: Yes

So I’ve heard this song before, I guess it is one of those songs you don’t know very well but have heard before. I had to go and listen to the original to compare it and I have to say, this is a pretty damn good cover, particularly Andre’s voice. The song itself, I do like it. I think it could be the theme song for a Bond movie if they made a western version of Bond. There is some orchestral accompaniment which lifts this a level.

I like all so far
In 7th place with 6 points is

@Declan A Walsh  - Britney Spears - Baby One More Time

Heard the song: Yes

Comments
Ah Britters, this song pops up every so often in these games. Can’t deny it is a fun song and everyone knows the lyrics and you will find yourself singing along when you hear it. What is there to say about it that hasn’t been said already. As good as it is, it has to lose points for familiarity and for the fact I like a lot of Britney’s early hits more than this one.

In 6th place with 7 points is

@ShaneU - Bon Jovi - It's My Life

Heard the song: Yes

Comments
I thought everyone knew I’m not a Bon Jovi fan so why risk picking one of their songs. So this is arguably their biggest and most well known hit post 2000. A bit of a spiritual successor to ‘Living on a prayer’ with the song theme and lyrics. This one gets the crowd pumped at gigs for sure. Do I like it? Sure I do but it is way too overplayed so I have to rank it with that in mind. You’re also losing points for having Bon Jovi in this category.

In 5th place with 8 points is

@Necro - Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill

Heard the song: Yes

Comments
This is quite an influential song. Not my favourite Kate Bush song but it can’t be understated how good it is. Musically and lyrically it is quite a simple song. Basically done on a drum machine and synthesiser and most of the synth was done by Kate herself. As I said though, as good as it is it is not my favourite of hers so that is where it loses points for me. The meaning of the song is quite interesting, a man and woman swapping places so they can understand how the other thinks. Interestingly also, as with a few other 80s songs, it has found recent success having appeared in the tv show Stranger Things, in fact it topped the UK charts last year for 3 weeks.

In 4th place with 9 points is

@ari101  - Muse - Starlight

Heard the song: Yes

Comments
Muse are a strange band for me, whenever I listen to them I feel I should like them but they never really do it for me. Now, to be honest, I don’t know too many of their songs. When I say I’ve heard this one it sounds only vaguely familiar. I didn’t like it so much at first, I thought it was average but I found myself singing it a day later so it must have struck a chord. Sure enough, when I went back for another listen it was much better and jumped up from the initial ranking. Nice little hook going on here and Bellamy’s vocals really suit it. Yeah, this one is good and catchy. Definitely fits the category for me as I don’t like Muse as such, at least not yet as I plan on listening to more of them, and this song is good. I also read that it is played in the TV show Jericho which I’ve watched 2 or 3 times so maybe I heard it there I’m not really sure. Good pick

In 3rd place with 10 points is

@Sephiroth_Dude  - Starship - We Built This City

Heard the song: Yes

Comments
A great record. What's not to like? I would challenge anyone here if they know more than 3 Starship songs though to rate them a band they wouldn’t usually like! Yeah, a bit of a novelty song and we’ve heard the parodies but this one just gets you moving. Very upbeat and easy lyrics to sing along to. Quintessential 80s and as familiar as we all with it, have to rate it high.

In 11th place with 2 points is

@jp liz v1  - Calum Scott & Leona Lewis - You Are The Reason

Heard the song: No

Comments
This is a good ballad and if I was rating it individually it would score it better though from a competitive view point I have to compare it to what we have here. Vocally it is great, I always rate Leona, she has a superb voice. The song itself is only just good. I have listened to it a few times and nothing really stands out to make it memorable for me. Ballad is such a tough genre, needs to be something special about a song and this one unfortunately doesn’t have it for me.

In 2nd place with 11 points is

@Wichita Lineman  - George Michael - I Can't Make You Love Me

Heard the song: Yes

Comments
I love this song. The piano accompaniment and tempo are just perfect. Do I like this cover? Yeah it is one of the better ones. I do however prefer this song sung by a female which is strange as it was written from a male perspective. That said, George does a great job here, he had such a versatile voice. I like some of his other songs so wouldn’t necessarily have him in this category though great pick.

In 12th place with 1 points is

@Irish Aris  - Coldplay feat. BTS - My Universe

Heard the song: No

Comments
So this song has topped the charts in quite a few countries and I’ve never heard it. I’m not familiar with the Korean boy band either so it’s definitely new to me. New doesn’t mean good unfortunately. Now I do like synth pop but this just sounds like a One Direction clone to me. I’m not saying it is terrible but there is nothing really memorable about it. Wait I lie, the video is quite good. Coldplay gets a lot of stick, I like quite a few of their songs but not really their poppy ones. This is probably the opposite of the theme here for me, a song I don’t like from a band I do like (generally speaking)

In 1st place with 12 points is

@Butty Brennan  - Katy Perry - The One that Got Away (acoustic)

Heard the song: Yes

Comments
Brilliant, I love this record and I’m very familiar with this acoustic version. Love the lyrics, love the music, love the production. Now, I’m not saying Katy Perry is the best vocalist in the world, she is far from it. I do like a lot of her songs but more in a ‘Yeah that’s a catchy song kind of way’ and this is by far my favourite. So it fits the category for me. Check out the Richard Marx version of this also if anyone is interested, it is quite good.

@Sephiroth_Dude  moves up 5 places to top the table after 5 rounds. Well done to @Butty Brennan  for winning round 5 and to @Rachel Stevens on a Pogo Stick  for taking home the bonus points. It is getting congested at the top now, thanks and see you soon again for the next round
