It all started in November 2019, my first tournament on Boards. The greatest One Hit Wonder. 19 tournaments later and it's time to find the REAL greatest One Hit Wonder.
Yes, for Tournament20, I'm re-running my first with stricter criteria (Thanks Declan )
For this tournament, given the theme, we will be finding the greatest OHW from the 2 most popular charts, UK and US. Then we will have a grand finale with the winners from both.
Each entry must be considered a OHW in one of the regions, ie. the song must have been the only top 40 hit for the act. If a song is considered a OHW in both regions, then it can be included in both. If the same song were to win both regions, then it would be the overall winner.
I will compile most of the songs for this, however, if you think of any you would like included, please PM me.
We will start it when we have enough songs, ideally, at least 32 from each region
Thank you for taking my suggestion on board, re Top 40. I remembering stumbling on the One Hit Wonder Tournament on Boards.ie in 2019. I think that was when I first came across Boards.ie's Forum Games. I was confused at the time for a few reasons, one of them being that I had not seen the nominations process, only the final contests. At the time, I annoyed a few people by questioning the definitions being used to make up a One Hit Wonder and querying various entries submitted! Little did they know then that I would stick around the Forum Games!
As you say, this is the "REAL" One Hit Wonder!! I have heard people from time to time describe songs that did not reach the Top 40 as hits, and this is probably even more relevant in the US Hot 100 where the amounts involved are much bigger. Some songs do get a lot of airplay without being being hits - I think they are actually included in the charts calculations in the US. But you do have to draw the line somewhere, and the Top 40 is an obvious mark of distinction, and it avoids most (maybe not all!!) arguments.
I think the biggest problem for Kol will be when people submit songs by acts, where they do not realise they had other songs in the Top 40. Hopefully, people will double-check the acts before submitting their songs!
