That is what crossed my mind. He used to really stick it to Mel Gibson in particular every year that he hosted the golden globes.

Can anyone answer this: was it common knowledge that Jada Pinkett had alopecia and that is why she shaved her head rather than just a fashion statement?
In other words would Chris Rock have known about it when he made the joke?

I didn't know, I thought it was for a role or fashion, she does rock it though, her kids had shaven heads too, before at least

She has been very open apparently. But obviously that didn't mean he knew. Apparently he didn't write the joke, I'd guess the writers are sweating a bit now

Size or ability to fight has everything to do with acts of violence. I don't find Brendan Schaub at all entertainment but I would like to see him roast will smith in perso.

Doea it matter wrt will Smith's actions? I don't think so
If chris rock didn't know then yes that matters re his own behaviour but it's still inexcusable to slap someone

RE: We don't know where we are, but at least we know what to do - nothing - 29-03-2022

I don't think it's ever appropriate to publically comment on someone's appearance unless it's something that can be fixed in a few minutes (spinach in the teeth, fly undone etc). Why a "joke" like that was ever approved and the academy are getting no wrath over it is ridiculous. No doubt those scripts go through more than one person. But I think it shows how little respect there is for women, especially regarding appearance, and no doubt they felt it was ok to snub Jada after her boycott a few years ago.

The hosts ( 3 females ) joked about actor Timothée Chalamet 's appearance

Does the Academy approve hosts and presenters monologues speeches introductions etc., before live on air?

I think Will has damaged his career and his PR apology won't save him

RE: We don't know where we are, but at least we know what to do - nothing - 29-03-2022

I would assume anything on an autocue would have to be approved by someone. I didn't watch it, but yeah that's not acceptable imo.

Definitely agree that Smith has done irreparable damage to his career now, and he's 99.9% to blame. The other fraction of a percent was for the abhorrent comment which provoked it.

RE: We don't know where we are, but at least we know what to do - jp liz v1 - 29-03-2022

Chris Rock has stayed quite

Quote:Jim Carrey, 60, was “sickened” by the standing ovation that Will Smith, 53, got at the 2022 Academy Awards on March 27. The King Richard star received huge support in the room when he won the Oscar for Best Actor, after he slapped Chris Rock, 57, on the stage earlier that night. Jim appeared on CBS Mornings two days later and explained to Gayle King why he was so turned off by the viral altercation.

“Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it just really felt like this is a really clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore,” the iconic actor and comedian said.

Jim noted that Will “should’ve” been taken out by security after the slap occurred on stage. When Gayle mentioned that Chris declined to press charges against Will, Jim explained that the fellow comedian probably “didn’t want the hassle.” I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for 200 million dollars because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous,” The Mask actor added. “That insult is gonna last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter, you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face ‘cuz they said words.”

RE: We don't know where we are, but at least we know what to do - Butty Brennan - 30-03-2022

I never thought I'd hear Jim Carrey of all people talking such sense Confused
He is right Smith should have been escorted off the premises as soon as he did it.
The oscars people don't seem to be taking any action against him at all.
It doesn't matter what nasty thing person A says to person B, when B hits A they are guilty of assault in the eyes of the law.
The law must be slightly different there: if you assault somebody on camera with thousands of witnesses present in this country you will be done for assault whether the victim wanted to press charges or not.
I'm suprised Rock isn't suing him either, he could take him to the cleaners like Carrey said.
Being that it is Hollywood you might even get some some of the audience taking Smith to court for traumatising them from witnessing it.

RE: We don't know where we are, but at least we know what to do - ari101 - 30-03-2022

The slap would likely be deemed a misdemeanor Battery in California. Unless the victim wants to press charges, generally these are not legally pursued where there is no injury resulting.

I thought it was a fake slap at first, it clearly wasn't, it was an inappropriate reaction to what turned out to be an inappropriate joke.

It was surprising the Academy took no action, I'm not sure what the right recourse should be but doing nothing isn't the answer.

It does raise the question too of where we draw the line with comedy generally. I understand Chris may not have written the joke or been aware of Jada's medical condition. Should people put up with jokes like this, or is all comedy that someone could possibly find offensive to be outlawed? If she had chosen the style (shaved), not because of a medical condition, the joke would seem fair game considering what we currently allow. It's an interesting question whether that standard needs to be revised.

I just watched the unedited version that was aired in Australia. Will was actually laughing at the GI Jane joke at first but Jada looked really pissed off. I think it was only after he saw her reaction that he went up to hit Chris. Then he was shouting at him after he sat back down.
I thought it was a publicity stunt as well when I heard about it, I remember some comedian hired an actor pretending to be a heckler to come up on stage and hit him, and Jim Carrey did it too with a wrestler as a stunt to promote his latest film, but you can see that Chris Rock was very rattled afterwards and he was messing up all his lines.

RE: We don't know where we are, but at least we know what to do - jp liz v1 - 30-03-2022

The fact Smith got a standing ovation on his win and no one condemned the violence or language outburst during the show with even Sir Anthony Hopkins praising Smith disappointed me

Really? Chris Rock is a comedian. The Awards ceremonies always have close to the bone jokes and comments. Remember Ricky Gervais?
Chris may not have realised Jada has alopecia. If he did then it wasn't in the best of taste but again comedians can be quite cutting at times.

Will Smith behaved like a complete scumbag. He went up on the stage and slapped Chris Rock who was there to do a job. He didn't just flip either. He did so calmly and only when he realised Jada was furious.

I think Will has a whole pile of issues and that Jada is a piece of work. He is possibly feeling emasculated by her or he is wary of fall out from her first r not jumping to her defense or a million other possibilities. They are a deplorable pair.

Chris Rock was the victim here yet he was the one left to stand alone without support while gobshite got hugs and standing ovations. I wonder what would have happened had a woman made the joke and gotten a slap? Absolute uproar I can tell you.

Not really sure what to put into the Time capsule to be honest. I don’t have family anymore, so a message for any future descendants is out of the question. Maybe just a few short anecdotes so that my name and those of my parents don’t end up completely forgotten?

Anyway, worksite here, just finishing up my lunch. Still have 30 minutes of break time that I’ll put to good use… or not pac
