Interestingly, 'tis nothing to do with timeslots when it comes to the US. Not like over here where the clock strikes 9 and everything is fair game, over there if you're not on HBO, Showtime, Starz or one of those premium cable channels, it doesn't matter if its midnight, you can't say "fuck" and you can't show nudity. Battlestar was a Sci-Fi Channel show which is a basic cable channel, so they just weren't allowed say fuck ever, and at the time not a chance any of the premium cable channels would've taken a punt on a Sci-Fi reboot.
As the old saying goes, don't hate the player (in this case Battlestar Galactica) hate the game (the archaic American Broadcasting Laws)...
