There's two local places, one doesn't deliver, the other only takes cash (none to hand).

Ah yeah, not counting some asshole neighbours, it's very quiet, everything is within walking distance, I'd never go back to a big town or city, just not for me.

Just quoted 640 euro for carpet of 19.99 a square metre that includes fitting.
This is the diagram. The longest section on left of picture is top landing. You turn right and go down 8 steps onto a mid landing then turn left to go down 4 more steps to the hall. The steps have a rise of 175mm and depth of 250mm (approx).

You're not paying for your exact dimensions. You're paying for the total cost of the roll to fit the required area, including excess.
Also, carpets are very expensive, particularly hall, stairs and landing as it could be a half day job if not more.
Also, price of smoothedge as trebled because if wood prices increase and you're probably buying underlay for your carpet.
